What is the skin barrier?

The body’s largest organ, your skin. It’s made out of several layers which each have important functions to protect you. Your skin barrier is made up of tough, strong skin cells named corneocytes. Formed together by the lipid layers: cholesterol, fatty acids and ceramides.

Why is it so important?

The skin barrier protects the body from harmful toxins penetrating the skin. It also protects you from dehydrating as the skin barrier is an essential part of making sure no water can evaporate or escape your body. Making it even more important to take good care of it.

What causes damage to your skin barrier?

External factors cause the most damage to your skin. The most common factor are:

  • Not using SPF
  • Allergies, pollution and irritations
  • Dry environments
  • Using the wrong/harsh skin care products

How to protect the skin barrier?

A simple 5-step skincare routine is enough to maintain healthy skin. Be aware of the products you use and make sure they have a suitable PH of 4.0 to 5.0 which are best for your skin. A moisturizer that contains vitamins c, ceramides, petrolatum or hyaluronic acid, have a positive effect and can help seal moisture into the skin.
